Solar power market in Iraq

The market and business development for solar power (photovoltaics) in Iraq, is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH together with expertise of RENAC. The project is part of the “Private Sector Development and Employment Promotion (PSD) Project” and aims for market development in the solar sector. Therefore it provides numerous measurements in the fields of capacity building, private sector development, and market creation.

Project Objectives

This project supports the private sector market development of solar PV in Iraq through comprehensive educational training programmes for those working in the training sector. This project works towards:

  • creating client demand for solar-powered applications;
  • creating good-quality PV systems installed by private companies; and
  • increasing the availability of professionals with relevant and/or transferable skills.

Activities

Activities will be implemented to support the three major goals of the programme: capacity building, private sector development, and market creation. Activities include:

  • capacity building through training programmes, courses, and workshops;
  • private sector development through mentoring programmes; and
  • market creation through information campaigns and networking portals.

Target Groups

Individuals and professionals currently working in private sector companies covering the entire value chain of solar PV projects are invited to participate, including:

  • project development
  • system design
  • wholesale
  • installation
  • operation and maintenance (O&M).

Engineers, technicians, and sales engineers who want to be trained in solar PV applications, including off-grid, grid-connected, and hybrid PV systems are also invited to participate.

1. Capacity Building and Training Activities

RENAC will conduct the following train-the-trainer programmes (on-site and online), with training partners for diverse target groups.

Energy Innovation Coaches (EIC)

A sponsored Training Programme

Date: February/March 2022 – October 2022

Format: Online phase with a presence seminar in Iraq

Apply now for a free energy audit carried out by the Energy Innovation Coaches

We are looking for companies that are interested in receiving an energy audit. It is a unique and win-win opportunity – for your company to receive a free of charge consultation and an energy audit with recommendations, and for our Energy Innovation Coaches to gain valuable practical experience.

Could your company benefit from an energy audit? We are looking for companies in Iraq that are keen to improve their energy performance and would be interested in receiving an energy audit free of charge.

If this applies to you, please take some minutes to fill out our short questionnaire under the following link: Energy Innovation Coaches Mentoring Programme (jotform.com).

In order for your company to be considered, please fill-in our short questionnaire by 30th of April 2023.

The Energy Innovation Coaches Training Programme is being implemented by RENAC (Renewables Academy) within the “Market and business development for solar power in Iraq” Project on behalf of the European Union (EU), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
The aim of this programme is to strengthen capacities and enable participants to successfully perform energy audits and consult Iraqi entities, decision makers, and clients on energy efficiency and renewable energy options to improve energy performance of buildings and industry.

The Energy Innovation Coaches Mentoring Programme is the final activity in which we will support and guide our newly trained Energy Innovation Coaches in the preparation, implementation and evaluation of an energy audit. Participants will be matched to companies for whom they will perform an energy audit.

What is the Energy Innovation Coaches Programme?

RENAC facilitates a training and mentoring programme for Energy Innovation Coaches (EIC). The idea is to ramp up the PV market by fostering knowledge exchange, linking stakeholders, and enabling idea generation. EICs shall consult companies on energy supply with PV, solar thermal and optimizing their energy consumption by energy efficiency measures. After attending the programme EICs shall be in the position to consult the building sector as well as industry and commerce on renewable energies (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) by:

  • evaluating the energy supply and the possibilities for the application of PV and solar thermal.

  • identifying the possibilities where and how much energy can be saved.

  • giving a comprehensive overview of buildings and industrial processes and their weak points.

  • showing how economical the individual energy-saving options are.

  • suggesting concrete measures to supply energy using RE and to save energy by EE.

Master Train-the-Trainer Programme Description

Date: December 2021 – February 2022

Format: Online phase with a presence seminar in Berlin, Germany

Status: Succesfully graduated

The objective of this programme is to establish a pool of national solar PV master trainers who will be responsible of conducting Train-the-Trainers seminars in Iraq for different target groups. This pool of around 8 master trainers were well selected and have been successfully trained according to RENAC standards and with RENAC training materials.

2. Private Sector Development Activities

As part of this section, there will be a mentoring programme, which will pair company owners and managers from Arabic or Kurdish speaking countries with Iraqi company owners, who are entering the PV market. The purpose of these activities are to encourage, inform, and support private sector companies in Iraq in developing business cases and models for different PV market niches. The newly-trained Energy Innovation Coaches (EIC) will be observers of the mentoring processes and learn about the topics discussed within the programme.
