ISA aimed to have a number of STAR centres across the globe acting as a shared facility that provided capacity for deployment of solar energy applications and research, business modeling, incubation, training, standardization, and testing, engaging faculty members from different disciplines/institutes of excellence and providing/using shared facilities, labs, testing centers, etc. To have accelerated impact, ISA aimed to strengthen the existing regional and national level infrastructure, mainly institutes, training centers, and facilities performing one or more functions. ISA member countries could build upon the existing institutes or set up new institutions as a STAR-Center. Several institutions in the same region, each covering one or more activities of the STAR-C program, could qualify as STAR-C. National centers undertaking research on innovative solar technologies and/or providing technical training aiming at empowering policymakers, engineers, project developers, and training trainers. These centers could be research and innovation centers, national universities, test centers, national training institutions, R&D centers, vocational training centers, etc. They could perform one or more functions on thermal and photovoltaic solar energy, assisting academic trainees, policymakers, industry, and end-users.

The study tour’s aim was to look closely at the pumped-storage power plant and how this technology can contribute to renewable energy in the Jordanian grid. The tour’s goal was also to encourage different innovative areas where both water and energy sectors work together to improve efficiency, reduce energy and water consumption, and increase the use of renewable energy, in order to reduce energy and water costs. This human capacity development measure targeted leaders, managers and technical professionals from the water and electricity utilities as well as the relevant ministries.

The overall objective of the project was to identify and pre-develop concrete green H2 projects in the partner countries. Local consumers and producers of grey H2 will be supported to switch to green hydrogen production through project development activities, training events and partnership approaches. The implementation of green H2 reference projects will be accelerated in the partner countries and for this purpose also funding instruments from Germany will be used and suitable technology partners will be identified.

Grupos destinatarios

The target group were local companies as well as decision-makers from the public sector. After the training, the participants were familiar with the global discussion on hydrogen and be able to assess whether, how and at which price their company could prospectively obtain green hydrogen.

Over the past ten years, the various benefits renewable energy (RE) technologies have increasingly captivated the interest of the international community. Understanding the availability and accessibility of renewable energy resources is crucial for the usage of the technologies that harness them. This course took participants through different renewable energy resources (sun, wind, and water) and focused on existing commercially-viable renewable energy technologies. Their suitability for different situations and in different parts of the world was evaluated. With this course, learners were introduced to different measures for integrating RE electricity sources into the grid.

The Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) is an independent regional organization, which aims to enable and increase the adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency practices in the Arab region.
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) commissioned GIZ to implement the project “Promoting Development and Employment through Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RE/EE) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) (RE-ACTIVATE)”.
RE-ACTIVATE helped to identify and exploit complementarities and synergies across national and/or sectoral borders in promoting sustainable energy technologies and sustainable local development. The analysis of the current capacity development context conducted by RCREEE highlighted the pressing need for high-quality training programs that required well-qualified instructors and training centers with appropriate equipment. Based on that, RCREEE initiated and proposed credentialing and certification programs to ensure the efficiency and reliability of capacity development programs for the sustainable energy market in the Arab Region.
