This online course is designed to provide a solid introduction to carbon pricing mechanisms, such as carbon taxes, emissions trading schemes, and offsetting mechanisms. It will also examine the rationale behind carbon pricing, the scope and landscape of available carbon pricing instruments, and focus on the specific role that carbon pricing plays in energy projects.

The three major carbon pricing mechanisms will be explained in detail, including their main principles, success factors, and barriers. Participants will analyse lessons learned as well as the effectiveness and usefulness of carbon pricing. The course concludes with a practical chapter focused on getting started with carbon pricing mechanisms.

  • The evolution of carbon pricing mechanisms
  • Principles of emissions trading schemes
  • Principles of carbon taxes
  • Principles of offsetting mechanisms

  • explain major historical developments in carbon pricing and illustrate the global landscape of carbon pricing mechanisms;
  • understand and explain the different basic design features and principles of carbon pricing mechanisms (e.g. carbon tax and emission trading schemes, offsetting mechanisms);
  • discuss major barriers to, key success factors of, and prospects for carbon pricing mechanisms in the economy and energy projects; and
  • know how to get started with carbon pricing by identifying and selecting appropriate instruments and project partners.
