In its nationally determined contribution (NDC) to climate protection, China aims to reach the peak of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 at the latest and to increase its share of non-fossil energy sources in primary energy consumption to 20%. Cities account for 70% of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. In particular the rapidly growing urban population confronts China with immense challenges. While 54% of the Chinese population is living in cities today, this is set to rise to 70% by 2030. China therefore sees an urgent need to implement climate protection measures in cities and to promote urban energy system transformation. Many Chinese cities are keen to transition away from polluting fossil fuels and towards clean and sustainable energy sources. As a stepping stone towards achieving this goal, a need for capacity building of municipal governments in integrated, strategic planning and implementation of green energy systems has been identified.

The Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) was implementing the IOC-ENERGIES programme with the objective of increasing access to sustainable and affordable energy services in the IOC region, namely in the states of Mauritius, the Seychelles, Madagascar and Comoros. These states were at different levels of development in the fields renewable energies (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) and came up with several initiatives and activities in both fields, however, most of them had been implemented without a national RE and EE vision or strategy. Therefore, the IOC-ENERGIES programme was supporting these four countries in developing national strategies. The project objective was a capacity building and training programme in renewable energy and energy efficiency for policy makers of the states of Mauritius, the Seychelles, Madagascar and Comorosand to improve the skills on energy policy and strategy development and implementation.

The contribution of women to the social and economic development of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies hasn’t reach its full potential. APEC Governments had implemented initiatives to advance the position, role, and impact of women and promoted women’s entrepreneurship and economic engagement through improving their access to education, finance, and technology. Developed by the United States and funded by APEC, the new project Empowering Women as Managers in the Renewable Energy Sector was then implemented by the Renewables Academy (RENAC), SD Strategies, and Nedworc Foundation.

The 3-year Solar Payback project was part of the German International Climate Initiative (IKI), funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUB). Solar heat for industrial processes (SHIP) is one of the most efficient ways to provide CO2-free heat for industrial processes. Unfortunately, the technology was and is relatively unknown. The main objective of Solar Payback was therefore to promote the use of Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP) across the four partner countries – Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, and India – by raising awareness of its technical and economic potential, and increasing willingness to invest in it. Target audiences for capacity building activities were engineering consultants, energy managers in industry, industrial plant owners and other commercial users, national and international banks and investors

Webinar series – Solar Power for Iraq
Solar Power for Iraq – was an open webinar series in June/July 2021. Experts shared their knowledge on promising solar power applications in the Iraqi market, their economic analysis and gave impulses for policy and business development. The series ended with an outlook on the Energy Innovation Coach scholarship programme in Iraq and further activities under the “Private Sector Development & Employment Promotion Project” in Iraq. The project was commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH together with expertise of RENAC.

Background

The Government of Viet Nam (GoV) has issued several policies and mechanisms towards promoting the development of new and renewable energy, as well as energy efficiency and conservation programmes. This provides the prioritization of fast and sustainable energy development, while aiming foster favourable conditions for all economic sectors, particularly the private sector, to participate in energy development. In 2020, Solar Power development has continued to experience unexpected growth, by the end of 2020, rooftop solar installed capacity grew by over 2.000% (from 378 MW) and almost doubled the capacity of ground-mounted solar, reaching a total installed capacity of 9.583,00 MWp from more than 102.000 rooftop solar systems. The power companies, responsible for grid integration of decentralized electricity generated by PV are playing a crucial role for the increase of PV installed capacity in the national system. The GoV pursues its social commitment to provide access to electricity to the entire country. BMZ is supporting these programmes with the project „Capacity development and training for the market development of energy efficiency and renewable energy in Viet Nam “. Capacity building is needed to increase the system quality on grid-connected PV systems, especially in the market segment of rooftop PV.
